What is BIS-CRS Certification?

The BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It mandates that certain electronics and IT products must conform to Indian Standards (IS) and be registered with BIS before being sold in India.

Products under this scheme must carry the BIS CRS Standard Mark (with R-number) as proof of compliance

If you are a manufacturer or importer of electronics or IT products in India, obtaining BIS CRS Certification is not optional—it’s mandatory. At IRPCA , we simplify this complex regulatory requirement with complete end-to-end support for BIS-CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) certification.

How to obtain BIS-CRS Certification

Product Assessment

We review your product’s specifications and confirm the applicable Indian Standard (IS code) under BIS CRS

Laboratory Testing

We coordinate testing of your product at a BIS-recognized laboratory in India. All test reports are generated as per applicable IS.

Documentation Preparation

We compile and verify all required documents:

  • Product technical file
  • Brand authorization
  • Factory license
  • Trademark registration
  • AIR documents (for foreign brands)

Online Registration with BIS

Your application is submitted through the CRS portal along with test reports, compliance declarations, and fees.

BIS Review & Approval

BIS evaluates the application. Once approved, you receive:

  • BIS Registration Certificate
  • Unique R-number for marking

We assist with correct placement of the BIS CRS logo + R-number on packaging and products in accordance with BIS marking guidelines.

What Products Are covered

BIS-CRS scheme covers a wide array of electronics and IT product categories—approximately 70–76 products. Key examples include:

  • Laptops, tablets, notebooks, mobile phones
  • LED/LCD/Plasma TVs (≥32″)
  • Printers, scanners, set-top boxes, video monitors
  • Power banks, adapters/chargers, UPS/inverters
  • Smartwatches, CCTV devices, routers
  • Microwave ovens, induction stoves, rice cookers
  • LED lighting products (lamps, luminaires, floodlights, etc.)
  • Solar photovoltaic modules/inverters, storage batteries
  • Webcams, Bluetooth speakers, smart speakers, wireless headphones

The product list has been expanded in phases since 2012, with additions in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022, and as recent as 2025

Labelling

The “Standard Mark” must be displayed on the product or packaging or both in a visible, legible, indelible, and non‑removable manner.

The Standard Mark must include:

  • The Registration / Licence number (R‑number) associated with the BIS CRS registration.
  • The Indian Standard (IS) number to which the product conforms.
  •  Must also be marked—either on the product, packaging, or both.
  • The size, dimensions, and colour scheme of the Standard Mark are specified in the Guidelines (Annexures in the BIS Standard Mark Guidelines).
  • Minimum font sizes: the text for “IS number, registration number, etc.” should not be less than Arial font size 6 (or equivalent) when printed.

E‑labelling (electronic labeling) is permitted for devices with integrally built displays (i.e., where a physical label may be impractical). But even then, the reference to the BIS website must still be marked physically on the product or packaging.

For devices using e‑labeling:

  • The product must allow the consumer to access the labeling information without needing extra accessories (e.g. no SIM/USIM required).
  •  The e‑label content must be protected against unauthorized modifications.
  • A physical label on the packaging is still required if e‑labeling is used.

Any change in marking / labeling (layout, design, text) must be approved by BIS. Unauthorized changes may lead to non‑compliance or suspension.
